The West Virginia Public Service Commission issued their decision in AEP’s net metering case and blocked AEP’s attempt to cheat solar producers out of fair compensation for their excess power… But the value of solar will drop for those who wait. They’re giving folks one last chance to be grandfathered in to the full 1 to 1 net metering rate.
So where did everything land?
Anyone that applies for their solar interconnection by March 1, 2026 will be eligible for 1 to 1 net metering for the next 25 years. Anyone who goes solar after the deadline will have a net metering rate of 12.4 cents per kWh for exported solar, 27% lower than it is today.
What’s net metering? Net metering refers to the policy that requires the utility company to credit solar producers for the excess energy they send onto the grid. Basically, it’s the billing mechanism by which solar saves folks money. Reducing the rate of net metering will reduce the value and savings that solar can deliver.
